Police ranks
After the first reference, police officers of rank above sergeant can be referred to as Mr unless they are female, when it is safer to stick to their ranks. For the senior staff - assistant chief constable, deputy chief constable and Chief Constable (note that only Chief Constable takes initial caps) - always use the title in full first time and then call them Mr or Mrs etc. Women police officers have identical titles to their male colleagues, although WPC is sometimes acceptable.
